Parapet originally this was a wall used to protect the ramparts of military structures. A low wall or fence at the edge of a platform roof or bridge. Now it is a low railing or wall along the perimeter of a roof or along the edge of a bridge balcony or raised platform. By definition a parapet is a vertical wall above the roof line.

The word comes ultimately from the italian parapetto. A low wall along the edge of a roof. A parapet is a barrier that is an extension of the wall at the edge of a roof terrace balcony walkway or other structure. Where extending above a roof a parapet may simply be the portion of an exterior wall that continues above the edge line of the roof surface or may be a continuation of a vertical feature beneath the roof such as a fire wall or party wall.

These are often decorative and extend the wall above the roofline. Low parapets like these are usually added for stylistic reasons and can be seen on victorian gothic and federation style houses.
