Painting over steel siding.
Begin by thoroughly cleaning your siding of all loose dirt chalk and other contaminants.
This is followed by fading and thinning of the color.
Aim the sprayer nozzle directly at the panels eight inches from the siding surface.
Paint the steel siding panels using the sprayer.
Step 2 protecting other areas.
Then put the paint of your desired color in the rolling pan and cover your paint roller with the paint.
Cleaning of the surface can be done by hand washing with warm soapy water or with the use of a high pressure washer 2500 psi minimum.
As with all exterior painting projects proper surface preparation is the key to restoring your metal siding.
Trigger the sprayer to begin the paint flow and use a back and forth motion to cover the length of the panel with an even coat of paint.
Step 4 retouch.
A pressure washer with a detergent tank is a good tool for removing chalk from the old paint surface.
Since any of this is clearly bad for your metal siding it is vital that you re paint your metal siding.
This stuff seemed to cover every square inch of siding and made for a lousy painting surface.
When this happens the metal is exposed to the elements and will start to eventually rust.
The first sign that this is beginning to happen is a loss of the glossy look that new siding has.
You can easily restore the original color and finish to look new again without all the problems of painting.
Use the ladder for painting the steel siding on the top and using the roller paint in a horizontal direction.
If there is any rust on the steel apply a rust converter over the siding which will turn the rust into a black substance you can easily clean off.
Do this as soon as any spots start to show the steel underneath or do it a little sooner if you are trying to sell your house.
Restore the original color and finish instead.
There is a great alternative to re painting your metal siding.
As long as the siding is clean you won t need to use a primer unless raw metal is exposed.
Finally since metal is such a good heat absorber avoid painting siding while it s getting direct sunlight.
That is how you can get the paint to adhere to steel siding.
I would use the red rust oleum primer the oil based primer and i would let it thoroughly dry after you knock off all the loose paint and sand it and make sure the surface is ready to accept it.
